As part of our NOW 2025 exhibition, artist Mengyi Zhang will lead a free Piaoqi (floating lacquer) fan workshop for families, where participants will have the chance to create their own vibrant, handcrafted lacquer fans.
Discover the traditional Chinese art of lacquer painting on fans, a practice that has been passed down for over two thousand years. Using an intriguing marbling technique, you'll explore this ancient craft and create a beautiful fan to take home and treasure.

- Young children must be supervised by an adult.
- Wear clothes you don’t mind getting messy.

Mengyi Zhang is a contemporary artist from Chongqing, China, works primarily with lacquer as a core material language. Her practice explores the generative and processual qualities of traditional craft, examining how such materials can be reconfigured and expanded within contemporary art contexts. For Zhang, lacquer is not merely a medium—it is a mode of thinking. She recently graduated from Royal College of Art with an Arts & Humanities (MFA).
