It was a pleasure to visit the remarkable collection curated by the Lewisham Local History Society, located beneath the New Cross Community Library in Deptford, earlier this week. This extraordinary archive, managed and catalogued by The Museum of Everyday Life, under the direction of Public and Community Historian Dr John Price comprises thousands of objects, images, and pieces of ephemera dating back over two hundred years.
Predominantly a digital museum and online archive, The Museum of Everyday Life champions a People’s History approach, powerfully demonstrating that history can be relevant, engaging, and alive and an active part of our communities, rather than something distant or forgotten.
We’re thrilled to be collaborating with the Museum and Dr John Price on a new exhibition opening at the Gerald Moore Gallery in March 2026, showcasing childhood objects from the 1920s to the 1950s. Items on display will include school uniforms, leavers’ certificates, stationery, and games. The exhibition will be enriched by hands-on workshops in object handling, drawing, painting, and sculpting, delivered in partnership with local schools.
If you are a local school in South East London and are interested in getting involved in the project, please email us at: info@geraldmooregallery.org
